Training: Adapting Vroom Content

Module 3: Complementary Language

Complementary Language

If you choose to align Vroom Content with your own messaging and copy, please consider the following recommendations around language and vocabulary.

Writing Style

Your organization likely has your own writing guidelines. In some cases when translating Vroom Content these recommendations may not even apply. But here are some suggestions to help ensure your writing complements Vroom Content and doesn’t create a mismatch in tone and style.

  • Compound Words and Hyphenation

Do not use hyphens with the Vroom Trademarks. You can hyphenate "brain-builder" or "brain-building" when it’s not part of a trademarked term.

The Vroom App shares more than 1,000 Brain Building Activities™ for parents.

When you do Vroom Activities with your child, you’re doing important work: Brain-building!

Every parent has what it takes to be a brain-builder.

“Bedtime,” ”bathtime,” and ”mealtime” should be used as closed compound words, not hyphenated.

You can make the most of bedtime and mealtime with Vroom Tips™.

As a Vroom Trademark, Brain Building Basics should always be capitalized, but not hyphenated. It should also always be stated fully and never shortened to just “the basics.”

  • Gender and Pronouns

Whenever possible, avoid singular gendered pronouns, such as “he” and “she.” (Some languages are gendered in nature. This note does not necessarily apply in those circumstances.) If using a pronoun is unavoidable, use a non-specific plural pronoun, such as “they.”

“When eating with your child, ask them what other foods are crunchy.”

  • AP Style Guide

When in doubt, we adhere to the current AP Style guide. It is currently available in English and Spanish.

Keep in Mind

The values of Vroom inform everything we do, especially our writing. Our strength-based, accessible style is key to our success. We encourage you to consider this when creating your own copy and materials, especially when it is used with Vroom Content. Now is a great time to revisit what we covered in Module 1, especially the four foundational Vroom Values section.
